Comparison of Brushless Electrically Excited Synchronous Machine with Different Rotor Structures

Abstract  A new brushless electrically excited synchronous machine (BEESM) is proposed, which is originated from the brushless doubly fed machine.It eliminates the brushes and slip rings so as to improve the reliability and reduce the maintenance cost.The proposed motor is characterized by two sets of stator windings with different pole numbers, acting as the three-phase armature winding and the exciting winding respectively.The structure and operating principle of the machine are introduced.And the equivalent circuit and electromagnetic torque expression of BEESM with a magnetic barrier rotor and a hybrid rotor are deduced.In order to study the effect of different rotor structures on the performance of BEESM, the operating characteristics of this kind of machine are simulated.And two prototypes with the same stator and two different rotors are manufactured.The inductance parameters are measured and the experimental researches on different operation modes are done.The simulation and experimental results indicate that the BEESM with hybrid rotor has a good performance of starting and synchronous operation with load.However, the efficiency of the BEESM with magnetic barrier rotor is little higher.
