Abstract  Due to the existence of zero sequence circuit when the open winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is supplied by a single DC bus, the common voltage generated by two converters and the triple frequency harmonic component of back EMF would produce zero sequence current. It might deteriorate the efficiency and operation stability of open winding PMSM. In order to solve this problem, a zero sequence current suppression strategy based on a proportional-resonant (PR) controller was proposed with one common DC bus in this paper. According to the mathematical model of the open winding PMSM and its zero sequence circuit, a closed-loop system with PR controller was designed to regulate the common voltage produced by the converters so as to suppress the zero sequence current. The stable operation capabilities of the proposed strategy on the different operation conditions were analyzed. Finally, the experimental system of open winding PMSM system was developed to validate the proposed zero sequence current suppression strategy.
