Abstract  This paper proposes a new method of optimal deployment of the traveling wave recorder (TWR) based on the extended double-end fault-location to realize maximum observability and cost-effectiveness in the complex power grid.A wide-area system can be regarded as an undirected graph. Then the lengths of the shortest paths between nodes can be computed. When a fault occurs on a certain point, the shortest paths from the point to all buses will be determined. The proposed mathematical optimization model is to guarantee that at least one pair of TWRs can be chosen to locate the fault points irrespective of their locations.A method of solving the model is chosen to find the optimal deployment strategy. Moreover,a method of increasing the degree of deployment redundancy is presented to enhance the reliability in N-1 condition. At last, the IEEE 30-node and IEEE 57-node systems have been applied to confirm the correctness and feasibility of the algorithm.
