Abstract  This paper mainly studies the influence of shafting models on the transient analysis of wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Based on the principle of energy conservation, the transient responses of PMSGs with double mass model or single mass model are compared. The mechanism about different shafting models causing different results of transient analysis is figured out. The transient responses of PMSGs with different shafting models and different control strategies are studied by simulations. A principle of shafting model selection suitable for PMSG transient analysis is also proposed. It is shown that the transient oscillation amplitude of PMSG shafting is smaller when the single mass model is adopted. For PMSG without damping control, the double mass model should be used, while for PMSG with damping control, the single mass model can be applied.
