Abstract This paper focuses on building a backup protection to remove single-phase high resistance grounding faults specially. By integrating the information of measured impedances at both ends of the line, it is shown that the summations are very different when fault occurs in the region and out of the region. A novel summation impedance relay is then proposed, where the steady-state values of measured impedances are collected and the criterion is simple. Simulation results prove that the proposed relay can remove high resistance grounding faults and avoid mal-operation. The proposed relay depends little on the change of system operation mode, and is independent of the open phase operation of lines. The requirement of data synchronization is extremely low. Its operating ability under the condition of high grounding resistance is much better than those of distance pilot protection and pilot differential protection. The summation relay can provide effective supplement for the existing main protection.
