Abstract High intensity pulsed switching is an important control unit of the pulsed power technology.The triggered vacuum switch (TVS) has the advantages of large flow capacity,fast media recovery rate,and little under voltage ratio.But it also suffers the problems of long conduction delay,big jitter,and easy false trigger.This paper designs a long gap distance laser triggered vacuum switch (LTVS).The conduction mechanism of the LTVS is related to laser ablation.Substances involved in conducting are atom,ion,free electron,and particle.When the gap distance of the LTVS is 12 mm,the withstand voltage is 30 kV.In order to assure the reliable conduction of the LTVS,50 mJ laser energy and 1 064 nm wavelength is used.When the distance to the cathode surface is 0 mm,the conduction delay of the LTVS is 1 μs and the jitter delay is 50 ns.The stable energy of laser ensures the little jitter delay.In this laser triggered way,the conduction delay can be shortened,the electromagnetic interference can be isolated,and the false triggering of switch can be eliminated.
