Abstract  There is an obvious contradiction between the utilization of the solid-state fault current limiter(SSFCL) and its investment cost. In this paper, the research and development of the SSFCL are summarized. It analyses the topology, technical characteristic and application prospect of the SSFCL, which basically achieves the multi-function, it also proposes a novel topology of multi-function solid-state fault current limiter. It discusses key problems of the MSSFCL in future development. Finally, it discusses the future application of the MSSFCL.
