Abstract Permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSMs) are a popular motor drive technology for electrified vehicles(EVs) drive systems because of their high power density and high efficiency. In this paper, three different types of interior PMSMs are extensively studied in FEM for traction drives. The motors utilize the same amount of permanent magnets, and are compared numerically in their motor performances including no-load EMF voltage, torque character, d axis and q axis inductances and anti-demagnetization ability. A V-shape interior PMSM is selected as the candidate motor and investigated further for the target application. Then the motor is prototyped and tested under no-load conditions to validate the numerical models built by the finite element method.
