A Coordinated Control Strategy of Flywheel Array Based on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

Abstract  In order to reasonably distribute the power of each unit in the flywheel array energy storage system (FAESS), this paper proposed a coordinated control strategy that takes into account the efficiency of the array and the energy balance of the units. Firstly, a mathematical model was established for the loss optimization of the FAESS, and then use the time-varying weight particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) with equality constraints to optimize the efficiency of the array. As the efficiency curve of each flywheel unit is different, the output power distributed to each flywheel unit may vary greatly during the efficiency optimization process, resulting in a large imbalance of residual energy among the units. In this paper, different flywheel units adopted different output power allocation strategies according to their residual energy, units with high residual capacity works at their rated power, units with low residual capacity does not work, and the units with medium residual energy use the PSO algorithm to allocate the power. Compared with several traditional flywheel array power allocation strategies, the grouping based PSO algorithm can coordinate the residual energy balance of the unit and the efficiency of the array, increase the efficiency of the array and reduce the difference of the remaining energy among the units. Finally, a simulation model was built in Matlab/Simulink to verify the correctness of the algorithm.
