Abstract The dual-parallel rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (DR-PMSM) offers a variety of operation modes. For instance, equipment such as twin-screw pumps, double-roller straw-returning machines, and crop-picking rollers must rely on the strict counter-directional, constant-speed rotation of the two shafts to generate the required mechanical actions of squeezing, shearing, or meshing. In twin-screw conveyors, large double-shaft mixers, and precision synchronous conveying systems, the two shafts must rotate at the same speed in the same direction to ensure smooth material transport, uniform mixing, or synchronous traction without slippage. In practical applications, many non-ideal operating conditions arise, so the two rotors of the DR-PMSM must produce different torques during operation. Such complex and diverse application scenarios pose severe challenges and demand in-depth research into the electromagnetic performance of DR-PMSM across different operating modes.
This paper presents a systematic study of the electromagnetic performance across four typical operating modes (co-rotating/counter-rotating, equal load/unequal load). Based on the finite element method, a motor simulation model is established to elucidate the mechanism of the magnetic gear effect and analyze the influence of steering on the transmitted torque and rotor electromagnetic force. Accordingly, a selection principle for the starting angle is proposed. The differences in key electromagnetic performances, such as magnetic field distribution characteristics, electromagnetic torque characteristics, loss characteristics, and power factor, and their intrinsic causes are clarified. Furthermore, the dynamic response of the single-sided rotor to a sudden load change is studied to reveal the transient variations in current, torque, and rotational speed.
The following conclusion can be drawn. (1) The magnetic gear effect in DR-PMSM varies significantly with the different rotation directions of the two rotors. When rotating in the same direction, the torque transmitted by the magnetic gear and the electromagnetic force acting on the rotor are both greater than when rotating in the opposite direction. A reasonable selection of the DR-PMSM's starting angle helps reduce the magnetic gear effect on motor operation. When rotating in opposite directions, set the starting angle to 0°; when rotating in the same direction, set it to 45° for the best results. (2) The electromagnetic performance of DR-PMSM varies under different operation modes, and the co-directional operating mode faces greater challenges. For the same DR-PMSM, the electromagnetic field distribution within the motor varies with rotation direction. Local magnetic saturation occurs in the co-rotating mode, making Mode Ⅰ and Mode Ⅲ superior to Modes Ⅱ and Ⅳ in terms of torque ripple, losses, efficiency, and power factor. In motor design and control, special attention should be paid to the co-rotating condition. (3) The transient process of the sudden change from symmetrical load to asymmetrical load indicates that the speed fluctuation is more intense in the co-directional operation mode. After choosing an appropriate starting angle, the torque ripple changes in the co-directional operation mode and the counter-directional operation mode are basically the same.
