Abstract Loop closing operation is a necessary means to realize load transfer without power cut, but it may generate a high loop closing current and lead to failure of power transfer. In order to fully exploit the regulatory potential of distributed generation (DG) in active distribution networks, this paper analyzes the active regulation conditions of the loop closing power separating nodes of the feeders with DGs, and its loop closing steady state and transient current constraints are also obtained. Then, a power transfer optimization model is proposed in the constraints of distribution network power balance, radial grid structure and substation transfer capacity limitation, for the objective function of minimum switching number. Afterwards, a verification of loop closing current constrains and optimal regulation of DGs’ outputs model is established in the constraints of loop closing steady state and transient current constraints, for the objective function of minimum DGs’ outputs change. And the above models are integrated to form a power transfer optimization model of active distribution networks in consideration of loop closing current constraints. Finally, the validity of the model is verified by a case study of a practical distribution network.
