Partial Discharge Under DC Condition With Pulse Discharge Degradation of High Voltage Storage Capacitors

Abstract:High voltage storage capacitors, which are key components in pulsed power system, are expected of high reliability. However, some of capacitors broke down in the early aging under service condition unexpectedly. If the insulation degradation of capacitors is well diagnosed, great advantages are taken in the reliability of the pulse power system. In this paper, it is realized that partial discharge (PD) detection under direct current (DC) voltage is the proper method to analyzing insulation degradation in capacitors after the service condition. To obtain effective data, the PD under DC voltage should be measured under certain detection voltage, direction, order and time. After capacitors breaking down, samples are dissected. It is found that the characteristic of partial discharge parameter can reflect the condition of dielectric insulation in storage capacitors.
