Abstract:Rotor step skewing technique is widely employed for torque ripple and mechanical vibration minimizations in permanent magnet synchronous machines. Using the three-dimensional finite element method, this paper comprehensively investigates the axial magnetic unbalance force in permanent magnet synchronous machines due to the rotor step skewing. The analysis results reveal that the axial stack length and stator radial ventilating air ducts have rather small impacts on the axial magnetic force, whilst the rotor skewing step number as well as the armature current amplitude and phase angle have relatively high correlations with both the average and peak-to-peak values of the axial magnetic force.
