Abstract With the rapid development of ultra-high voltage and extra-high voltage power transmission and transformation technology, higher requirements are put forward for the insulation performance of power equipment. Epoxy insulation is an important part of the insulation system of high voltage power equipment, but some insulation defects with different levels will appear in the process of production and operation. Under the action of multi-field coupling, it is easy to cause surface flashover or breakdown fault, threatening the safe and stable operation of power equipment and even power system. It is of great significance to study the non-destructive detection methods of defects in epoxy insulation parts. In this paper, the defect types of epoxy insulation parts which were prone to appear in the production process and operation process were studied, and the impacts of different defects on the insulation performance were analyzed. The basic principles of defect detection methods based on electrical characteristics, high frequency detection methods and ultrasonic detection methods were introduced, and the detection effects of different methods on epoxy insulation defects were evaluated. A comprehensive evaluation of relative detection methods was made from the perspective of detection accuracy, advantages and disadvantages, and the future research and development direction of epoxy insulation defect detection was prospected.
