Abstract In order to extend the applications of distributed generation (DG) and improve the power quality in the distribution network, a novel series compensation scheme is proposed in this paper. In this scheme, a DG and a series compensator (SC) share a same DC bus. The power electronic devices would regulate the power flow in the distribution network flexibly. When the upstream source undergoes a voltage sag, the SC can obtain the active power support from the upstream source and the DG simultaneously. This scheme could maintain the load voltage to the desirable level and improve the load ride-through capability effectively. Through the phasor diagram and theoretical derivations, this paper provides a general relationship between the voltage sag magnitude, voltage phase angle jump and the SC rating. Simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed scheme.
