Abstract In order to decrease the number of power devices needed by the bearingless switched reluctance generator, a novel exciting mode in which the three adjacent excitation-windings are connected in series is investigated in this paper. Based on the winding voltage equations, the transient equivalent-circuit model is established and the induced potential is analyzed. After that, the energy conversion process under different modes is illustrated according to the flux-linkage-current curves. Then the control strategy is proposed with the mathematical model developed to simplify the controller. The experimental results verify the proposed method.
