Abstract In order to reduce the speed overshoot of the traditional PI speed controller in direct drive permanent magnet synchronous motor (DD-PMSM), a novel speed controller is presented in this paper. In addition, a load torque observer is designed to reduce the effect of load torque or motor parameters changes and other disturbance factors on the system performances. The observed torque is transformed to load current which is imported to the input port of current regulator and used as the signal compensating for the output of the novel speed controller. Simulation and experimental results show that the speed overshoot can be reduced by adopting the proposed novel speed controller. The speed tracking performance and the capacity of anti-load disturbance can also be improved by the novel speed controller. Besides, it is demonstrated that the load torque can be estimated precisely by the designed load torque observer and the capacity of anti-load disturbance is further improved with the load torque feed-forward compensation. Therefore, the validity and effectiveness of the proposed novel speed controller based on load torque observer are verified.
