Abstract A novel PM propelling motor used in integrated motor propeller (IMP) is designed in this paper, and no-bearing structure as well as Halbach array is applied in the motor design. Optimization design is conducted in the aspects such as PM structure, magnetizing angle of PM and the best ratio of PM length to poles. The designed motor has thinner rotor and larger air gap; field-circuit coupling method appropriate for analyzing this special PM motor in IMP is proposed, and control equation of external circuit is coupled with electromagnetic field equation of motor, and influence from speed difference to resistance of solid rotor is also considered. Through the calculation method presented in this paper the magnetic field distribution at rated load and no load is obtained, and back EMF, stator current, voltage and torque is also calculated. The good agreements between calculating results and experiment ones verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
