Abstract The research on the cascade H-bridge multilevel topology based active power filter (APF) is more and more extensive. The dynamic performance and its enhancement of the cascade APF are studied in this paper. The reason why APF with source current feedback control has a poor dynamic performance is analyzed. Based on the discussion of the ideal dynamic response, a method for improving the dynamic performance is proposed. The method has the following features: when steady-state, control strategy of APF is source current feedback control; while transient-state, the control strategy is a kind of composite control. The implementation of the proposed method is presented. The scheme of DC-link voltage balance control is also described. Furthermore, simulation and experiment results show the high performance of the proposed cascade APF.
