Abstract Calculating eddy current loss in the end region of submersible motor is a prerequisite for accurate calculation of its thermal rise, and it is one of the key to guaranteeing the operation safety of submersible motor. The eddy current loss of 2 800kW water filling submersible motor equipped with a single-layer concentric winding is analyzed. Firstly, the mathematical model of magnetic field in the end region of large water-filled submersible motor is constructed by 3-D finite element method. Then the conductive material area is selected for eddy current region, cooling water and the non-conductive material area for non eddy current area. The end shield and frame are applied with impedance boundary conditions. The mathematical model of the eddy current loss is established and finite element method is used to calculate eddy loss distribution of stator end core, stator and end winding. Finally, the influence of end structure parameters on eddy current loss is studied. The conclusion can provide some help for the practical engineering problems, and provides a reference for optimization design of end winding structure and improving motor operation reliability.
