Abstract In this paper, a lumped common mode equivalent circuit model of a variable frequency motor driven by PWM inverter is proposed and the formulas of the key parameters in the equivalent circuit are presented. By researching a 3kW variable frequency motor, the simulation results and the experiment results provide the feasibility of the equivalent circuit and the parameters of the inverter fed induction motor. Base on the relationship between the common mode voltage and the generation mechanism of shaft voltage and bearing current, the impact of the carrier frequency and the motor running frequency to common mode voltage, shaft voltages and bearing currents is studied, which provides a theoretical basis for further studying of the suppression measures of bearing currents and increasing the life of a the inverter fed induction motor.
