Abstract This paper depicts the numerical nonlinear simulation done in Matlab simulation software in order to study the nonlinear characteristic of digitally controlled switched reluctance drive and therefore provide method to improve system performance. The given work makes use of the phase space reconstruction theory to analyze the time series of speed error derivative. The correlation dimension and maximum Lyapunov exponent are calculated and the results prove that chaotic behavior exists in switched reluctance drive. On this basis, a new frequency chaotic modulation strategy is designed and compared to Chua’s circuit chaotic modulation. From simulation and experimental results it is clear that the new frequency modulation strategy can improve the electromagnetic compatibility.
