| A Novel Method to Improve the Temperature Stability of Optical Current Transformer |

Abstract Weak temperature stability baffles the popularization of optical current transformers (OCTs) in electric power system. A novel temperature compensation method based on comparative measurement, called comparative OCT is proposed here. Comparative OCT introduces a DC magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet as reference, and compared the AC magnetic field of primary current with the reference. Thus a final result irrelevant to temperature but only proportional to the primary current could be reached. Comparative OCT compensates Verdet constant and linear birefringence simultaneously, which are the two main factors that damage the temperature stability of OCTs. A new dual-input and dual-output sensor structure is designed to meet the special requirement of demodulation. Temperature tests of comparative OCT are carried out and the results show the compensation method based on comparative measurement is effective.
