Abstract:A novel double-infeed HVDC system, combining a conventional high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) and voltage-source converter based HVDC (VSC-HVDC), is proposed in this paper for supplying an entirely passive AC network. The detailed model for starting HVDC using VSC-HVDC is provided and control strategies of the whole system are designed. Aiming to validate the steady state and dynamic performance of the double-infeed HVDC system, the process of starting HVDC using VSC-HVDC and the dynamic performance of double-infeed HVDC when three-phase to ground fault occurring at HVDC inverter side are investigated. PSCAD/EMTDC Simulation results show that, the proposed double-Infeed HVDC system can supply power to passive network and it also has favorable dynamic and fault-restoration performance.
