Abstract:This paper is concerned with the origins of 50Hz power frequency used in Mainland China. In the early development stage of the power industry, there were various kinds of power frequencies in the world. All the turbogenerators used in Old China imported from abroad, thus there existed different kinds of power frequencies. In 1928, OPPEL Lamp Manufacturers Ltd. in China suggested that the government should prescribe 50Hz as the standard power frequency of China. Then, in September 1930, the government prescribed 50Hz used by more than half the power generation stations of China and many regions of the world as the standard power frequency of China, and the first standard rule of China was constituted. 50Hz has still been prescribed as the standard frequency of China since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. Based on science and technology conditions at present, if we could choose the standard power frequency once again, the viewpoint of author is that the most appropriate frequency may be several hundred hertz.
