Transient Analysis for Surge Protective Device Based on PSCAD/EMTDC Simulation |

Abstract Problems of lightning damage to electronic information systems are increasingly serious. A circuit of the surge protective device is designed in this paper for protecting AC supplies of electronic information systems from lightning surge overvoltages. By means of the measured discharge characteristics, a simulation model is set up for the key component of the surge protective device, i. e. the gas discharge tube. On the basis of the model, PSCAD/EMTDC software is used to perform a simulation analysis for the lightning transient behavior of the surge protective device. Also, the lightning impulse experiments are made to obtain transient responses of the designed protective device. The measured response results are compared with the corresponding simulation results and a better agreement is shown between them, which confirms the validity of the simulation model.
