Abstract This paper combined the control features of VSC-HVDC with the characteristics of the direct driven wind turbine with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to propose a series multi-terminal VSC-HVDC based offshore wind farm integration circuit topology. This topology simplifies the structure of PMSG,by omitting the inverse function of PMSG full power converter,which connects the rectifiers in series to form a structure of series multi-terminal VSC-HVDC,and a multi-level VSC structure is applied for the on-shore grid side inverter. Moreover,the topology structure avoids multiple current changes through the traditional high voltage direct current transmission,and also reduces the system complexity and decreases the transmission loss by decreasing the steps for electricity conversions. In addition,this paper also put forward a control strategy for the topology structure addressed above,and conducted a large scale wind farm simulation experiment. The simulation results demonstrate that this circuit topology could be stably working and the control strategy could implement the wind turbine individually maximum power point tracking(MPPT) and system efficient operating for each converter.
