Doubly Fed and Asynchronous Starting Control Strategies of Brushless Doubly Fed Machine

Abstract  Brushless doubly fed machine (BDFM) is a kind of multi-port electrical machine with stator excitation, which has multiple degrees of freedom and flexible operation modes compared with the conventional asynchronous and synchronous machines. During the start-up process, dual stator windings of the BDFM are supplied with two different AC power sources successively. In order to avoid shock while obtaining the ideal output torque, the appropriate starting method should be selected according to torque characteristics and application conditions. Firstly, the torque characteristics of the BDFM under doubly fed and asynchronous modes are analyzed by the mathematical model. Then, a constant torque asynchronous starting control strategy based on virtual resistor and a doubly fed starting control strategy based on control side voltage tracking are proposed for asynchronous and doubly fed operation modes, respectively. Finally, an experimental platform based on a 30kW prototype is established, and the results verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed two starting control methods.
