Abstract To reduce the reactive power and peak current with the dual active bridge DC-DC converter under conventional dual phase shift (DPS) at non-heavy load, an optimized dual phase shift (ODPS) modulation is proposed in this paper. Two freedom degrees of ODPS are redefined. Based on this condition, the mathematical model of transmission power, reactive power and current stress with ODPS modulation are established. Besides, the reactive power and current stress of ODPS and DPS under the same transmission power were compared and analyzed. By comparison and analysis, the reactive power and current stress at non-heavy load can be effectively reduced by ODPS modulation, and thus the system efficiency can be improved. At last, experimental results verify the excellent performance of transmission power with ODPS modulation and correctness of the theoretical analysis.
