Abstract In view of the traditional direct or indirect temperature measurement of cable, there are problems such as great influence by ambient temperature, poor measurement accuracy, and high application cost. A non-invasive temperature measurement for high-voltage single-core cables based on temperature field construction was proposed in this paper. The regional temperature field and gradient were constructed by partially wrapping the thermal insulation medium outside of the cable sheath. Relative temperature between each temperature in the thermal insulation layer and the ambient temperature was taken as the sensitive parameter of the temperature gradient relationship that can extract the temperature gradient law. The analytical calculation formula was derived, which can accomplish the indirect measurement of the steady-state temperature of the cable core by utilizing multi-point temperature outside the cable. The experimental results show that: The solution error of cable core temperature is below 3℃ by using the revised theoretical calculation formula and data fitting formula. The measurement method is economical and convenient, which can realize real-time measurement of the steady-state temperature of the cable core without destroying the cable body.
