Abstract In interior permanent magnet machines, there are extra gaps between magnets and rotor laminations, and the laminations may be misaligned when they are stacked to a rotor iron core. In this paper, both magnetic circuit method and three-dimensional finite element method are used for analyzing and computing the airgap field, revealing that although the extra gaps decrease the motor airgap field, the stacking misalignment helps to remedy the field decrease.
