Abstract  Reducing the peak voltage of the shutdown switch and increasing the load current are considered as the difficult problems in the design of inductive pulsed power supply. Therefore, based on the structural characteristics of the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), the traditional meat grinder circuit was improved in this paper. By utilization of a large-ratio coupled inductor coils and a diode anti-paralleling with the IGBT, the circuit achieved the ability of self-recovery. The improved inductive pulse power supply has only two IGBTs, which can reduce the control requirements of the switches and generate a large current with several tens of kiloamperes. Besides, it also has the potential of repetitive operation. In this paper, the dynamic process of the proposed circuit model was staged analyzed in detail. Learning from the simulation result, the proposed circuit has the advantage of smooth and high-peak current output. To demonstrate the effectiveness, the 4.61kJ inductive pulsed power supply was designed where a 20:1 large variable ratio coupled inductor was adopted. Finally, the tested peak load current reached 30.40kA with 1.7ms pulse width, which was in good agreement with the expectation analysis.
