Abstract  The disk transverse flux permanent magnet brushless motor (DTFM) has a great potential application due to its decoupling between the electric load and the magnetic load, higher power density as well as shorter axial length. According to the principle features of the DTFM as well as complementary ferromagnetic properties of the soft magnetic composite (SMC) material and laminated silicon steel materials (Si-Steel), the SMC-Si Steel (SMC-Si) cores DTFM is presented in the paper in order to make further improvement on its performance. First, the theoretical structure of SMC-Si DTFM is introduced, and its superior performance is confirmed by comparison with its counterpart DTFMs made of Si-Steel cores and SMC cores respectively. Then the methods to weaken cogging torque of the SMC-Si cores DTFM are studied. At last, the prototyped SMC-Si cores DTFM is manufactured and tested.
