Abstract Accurate calculation of the air gap magnetic field of compound machine is the key to design and analysis of the compound machine. In this paper, an analytical method is proposed to calculate the magnetic field distribution in a flux-decoupling magnetic geared-permanent magnet brushless machine (MG-PMBM). According to the structural characteristics of the machine, the analytical model of magnetic gear and PMBM is established, respectively. The main solution fields are: inner, middle and outer three-layer air gap, inner and outer double-rotor permanent magnet region and inner and outer double-stator slot region, and the solution is obtained using boundary and continuity conditions. Owing to obtaining the analytical expressions of air-gap flux density, the magnetic field distribution of the machine, the cogging torque, the back EMF and electromagnetic torque were computed by the analytical method. The prototype was made and the test platform was built, and the no-load and load test were carried out. Compared the analytical calculation waveform with the test waveform, the results are consistent, which proves the proposed method is correct and effective.
