Abstract Since a large amount of regenerative energy could not be effectively utilized in the traction power supply system (TPSS) of High-speed Railways (HSR), this paper proposed an energy storage scheme based on railway power conditioner (RPC) and corresponding control strategies. The topology of the energy storage scheme was firstly analyzed as well as the energy transmission characteristics of 4 typical operating conditions. Then, the dynamic compensation principle of RPC was analyzed and an improved control strategy of RPC with energy storage system (ESS) was deduced and designed. Moreover, the control strategy of ESS was proposed on the basis of current loop control method. Finally, case studies were conducted to verify the validity and feasibility of the above design. The results show that the regenerative energy can be effectively stored and reutilized with the proposed energy storage scheme. Compared with the traditional control strategy of RPC, the improved control strategy is better to solve the negative and harmonic issues in the TPSS with ESS.
