Abstract Ripple current on DC-link capacitor is one of the key factors affecting weight and volume of brushless DC motor (BLDCM) control system. Analytical calculation of the ripple current can guide the process of choosing DC-link capacitor, and can be of help for the BLDCM control system design in practical project. For now, however, there are few studies on the calculation method of the ripple current on DC-link capacitor for BLDCM square wave control system. The generation mechanism of ripple current on DC-link capacitor for BLDCM square wave control system was studied. Based on the analysis of current variation regularity during commutation processes of BLDCM, the analytical expressions of effective value, average value and instantaneous value of DC-link current were derived. The exact expression of the ripple current on DC-link capacitor for BLDCM square wave control system was obtained finally, and the expression accuracy was validated by simulation and test result.
