Abstract Emerging power supply such as micro grid generates the intermittent non-stationary complex harmonic which brings adverse effects on electrical equipment. A novel technique for complex harmonic parameters estimation is proposed using incomplete S transform (IST) by means of the compute mode of non-ergodic spectrum and non-fixed window width coefficient. Firstly, the optimal window width coefficient of each concern frequency point is determined based on the principle of amplitude directly measuring. Secondly, IST vector of each concern frequency point is calculated using overlapping compute mode, so as to eliminate its end effect. The harmonic instantaneous frequency and phase estimation formulas are obtained use the principle phase coherence between IST vector and original signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by simulation and experiment, and the results show that the maximum relative error of estimated parameters is about 1% with the proposed method under the worst spectrum leakage, and it can track the change of complex harmonic parameters in real time.
