Abstract According to the different change ratio between the pole arc of the stator tooth and that of rotor tooth at the different circumferential in the axial flux switched reluctance motor (AFSRM), the quasi- three-dimensional (Q-3-D) analytical method is used to study the AFSRM in the different radial delamination, and the accuracy of the Q-3-D analysis is improved to determine the initial electromagnetic design scheme compared with the result of the two dimensional analysis method. On the basis of Q-3-D analytical method, Q-3-D finite element method is employed to optimize the main design parameters with the different electrical steel material. Research results and prototype test data show that, the electromagnetic performance of the AFSRM with the grain oriented electrical steel is superior to the traditional non oriented material motor. Q-3-D analysis method has a high accuracy, for the initial design of the motor, the analysis error is considered acceptable.
