The Design and Testing of a 1 MW/60 MJ Flywheel Energy Storage Power System

Abstract  

The balancing on the shaft of flywheel-motor,the charging/discharging experiments,loss and efficiency testing was carried out on a 1 MW/60 MJ flywheel energy storage power system developed for the hybrid power system of an oil drill rig.The kinetic energy with 60 MJ was stored by a high strength alloy steel flywheel with variable-cross-section.The permanent magnetic bearing bore 97% of weight of the vertical shaft of the flywheel and motor.The permanent magnets were imbedded in the rotor laminated of silicon-steel sheets with grille structure for safe rotationat high speeds.The control hardware and software was developed for the charging in power of 100-300 kW and discharging in power of 500-1 000 kW.Control strategies such as flux-weakening,double closed-loop of speed and current,voltage closed-loop and current feedforwardwere used in the charging and discharging of the permanent magnet motor.The vibration displacement was decreased to lower than 0.07 mm after field balancing on the flywheel-motor bearing system.The energy storage efficiency is 86-88% in one charging/discharging cycle in the running of the flywheel energy storage system.
