Abstract  Gas triggered switches are important components in pulse power circuit. For the requirements of low-jitter and long working-life triggered gas switches in actual conditions, the polycyclic type trigger electrodes with multiple pores are designed, combined with the field distortion trigger switch of three electrodes. The breakdown characteristics of trigger switches are tested, where the structures of main-trigger electrodes are flat-polycyclic, flat-disk, and spherical-disk. The test results are compared with electric field simulation results. It is proved that, under 22.4kV/40ns triggering pulse and 5.0~7.5kV loading voltage, the switching time and jitter of flat-polycyclic type switch are more stable. The switching time delay of flat-polycyclic type switch is between 81.0~84.5ns, and the switching jitter is 0.8~1.1ns. Regarding the switching time and jitter, the flat- polycyclic type switch shows better performance than flat-disk type switch, and it is similar as spherical-disk type switch but its working life is longer than spherical-disk type switch.
