Abstract To research the influence of the electric filed and pollution method on the distribution of conductive ions in ice-covered composite insulators,a series of energized and non-energized tests were conducted on 35 kV composite insulators with glaze icing using two different types of pollution methods in artificial climate chamber.Combined with COMSOL simulation,the influence of water droplet on the icicle tip and droplet ejection during icing on insulators icing was analyzed.And the influence rule of the electric field,pollution method and pollution severity on ions distribution was revealed.Test results show that the appearance of ice-covered insulator,ions distribution in the ice layer and icicle and the flashover voltage are significantly impacted by the electric field;melting water conductivity under energized condition is lower than that under non-energized condition using icing water conductivity method;melting water conductivity is much higher than freezing water conductivity using the sold layer method under non-energized condition;the flashover voltage of ice-covered insulator under energized condition is higher than that under non-energized condition,however,melting water conductivity during the flashover is opposite.Therefore,the crystallization effect should be taken into account when analyzing the flashover performance of ice-covered insulators.
