Abstract A new method of power system reliability evaluation is presented. This method is based on the combination of Monte Carlo simulation and the decoupled optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm, and takes into account both reactive power adequacy and bus voltage constraints. Using the proposed method, the systematic calculations of the reliability indices for the Roy Billinton test system (RBTS) have been performed. Especially, the dependences of the reliability indices on unit capacity and reactive power adequacy are analyzed in detail, and the new technique for improving system reliability is suggested, which can provides the reliability-effective approach in power system planning and operation.
