Abstract In order to study the detection effectiveness of partial discharge provoked by suspension defect in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) under impulse voltage, the experimental platform of suspension defect under impulse voltage has been set up in the laboratory. The partial discharge signals provoked by suspension defect have been measured, under non-oscillating impulse voltage (standard lightning impulse, standard switching impulse) and oscillating impulse voltage (oscillating switching impulse). The partial discharge characteristics thereafter have been studied. The results indicate that, the partial discharge of suspension defect has high stability and repeatability under the non-oscillating impulse voltage and oscillating impulse voltage, and the impulse voltage waves are effective to detect the suspension defect.
