Abstract Abrupt load change is a common phenomenon of power system.When it occurs,the bus voltage of DC micro-grid may collapse if the power system cannot fully support such abrupt change.Consequently,the stability of both voltage and frequency of the power system will be influenced.In this paper,a grid-connected DC micro-grid model including photovoltaic battery,energy storage and the large power grid is established in Matlab/Simulink.From the view point of power flow,four operating modes of DC micro-grid are introduced.The phenomena regarding instability is presented when the load is abruptly changed.The relationship between instability of DC micro-grid and power flow,as well as the operating modes,is investigated.The mechanism on stability loss of the DC micro-grid system is studied from both theoretical and numerical ways,and the corresponding stability boundary is also given.The results of this paper will provide a reference to the design of the DC micro-grid.
