Abstract Cogging torque is a common problem to permanent magnet machines,and it is one of the issues that should be paid attention to at the design stage.The line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM) has the self-starting ability by utilizing the asynchronous torque which generated by squirrel-cage,but the cogging torque will adversely affect the operation of LSPMSM.The methods of reducing the cogging torque of LSPMSM by changing the parameters of stator teeth and slots are studied.The analytical expressions of the cogging torque with the changing of the stator tooth width,the pairing of the stator teeth and the pairing of the stator slots are deduced.The corresponding methods of determining the suitable parameters of stator teeth and slots that can effectively reduce the cogging torque of LSPMSM are given.The calculation by finite element method (FEM) shows that the above methods can effectively reduce the cogging torque of LSPMSM and do not significantly affect the motor performance.
