Abstract In order to understand the dielectric properties of the transformer oil based on nanofluids and explore its internal modification mechanism, this paper investigates the dielectric loss characteristics of the transformer oil based on SiO2 nanoparticles. Firstly the broadband dielectric spectroscopy of the pure transformer oil and the oil based on SiO2 nanoparticles are measured at room temperature. The measured results are fitted by the modified Havriliak-Negami model function. Then the model’s parameters are extracted and analyzed. The results indicate that, comparing with pure oil’s dielectric spectroscopy, the conduction loss in low frequency domain of SiO2 nano-modified oil decreases, while its polarization loss in higher frequency domain increases. Through analysis and discussion, it could be inferred that the microscopic electric double layer will be formed in the interfaces of nanoparticles and oil molecules after the incorporation of the SiO2 nanoparticles into the transformer oil. This microscopic structure enhances the transition barrier of the charge carriers in nanofluids, resulting in the change of macroscopic dielectric properties of the transformer oil based on nanofluids to a certain degree.
