Abstract In order to establish the relationship between the intensity of solid epoxy insulation surface discharge in SF₆ equipment and the increasing law of characteristic gases,corresponding defect model with copper attached to the surface is set up in this paper.It is found in the experiment that different gases present different growth characteristics,even the same gas takes on different growth characteristics under different discharge strength.The ratio between the concentration of different gases and CS₂ is studied,which presents totally different characteristics withdifferent levels of discharge.The species,concentration and trends over time of characteristic gases under tow levels of discharge are compared.The gases include SOF₂,SO₂,CS₂ etc.,which are generated under two different discharge intensities.By studying the relationship between the gases and the discharge strength,and the inherent relationship between the gases,the state of internal solid insulation can be diagnosed using characteristic gas analysis.
