Abstract In this paper, the transient stability of multi-machine power system is investigated. Firstly, we express a multi-machine power system with static var compensator (SVC) as a dissipative Hamiltonian structure. Then, using the Hamiltonian function method, an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) for generators and a robust decentralized coordinated controller for SVC is proposed. By choosing appropriate parameters, the proposed control scheme in this paper is also an L₂ disturbance attenuation controller. Finally, compared with the coordinated controller of AVR/PSS (power system regulator), the proportion-integration-differentiation (PID) SVC controller, and the feedback linearization coordinated controller for the excitation and SVC, the simulation results indicate that the proposed coordinated control scheme can improve both the transient stability and the voltage regulation performance of the power system more effectively than the other coordinated control schemes.
