Abstract Considering the unbalanced input condition, this paper finds out the relationship between the fictitious DC voltage and the unbalanced inputs. A prediction control method of fictitious DC voltage is presented in order to restrain the unbalanced situation. The fictitious DC voltage is calculated online to confirm the variable of prediction control in every switching period. This method not only reduces the disturbance of outputs caused by unbalanced inputs, but also promises the correct modulation of the input space vector. The control principle and realization of the prediction method are presented in detail. The simulation and experimental results show that this prediction modulation of the matrix converter is suitable to be applied in AC drive system and the unbalanced inputs are adapted so as to improve the practicality of the matrix converter.
