Abstract In order to improve the control system complexity of the open winding permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG), a novel configuration and optimized control strategy of the open winding PMSG system with the integration of full controlled and uncontrolled converter is proposed in this paper. Based on the mathematic model of open winding PMSG, the distribution mechanism of the voltage space vector with the single-side controllable rectifier is discussed. By analyzing the effect of current vector on the voltage vector of ac side in the uncontrolled rectifier, the voltage modulation range of open winding PMSG system within the same DC-link voltage ratios is studied, and the unit power factor control is selected as the optimized control strategy to implement the maximum linear modulation index. Finally, the experimental platform of open winding PMSG system with single-side controllable rectifier is developed to validate the correctness and availability of the proposed open winding PMSG system and control strategy.
